ChatGPT apps are now plugins: submission changes
What OpenAI now asks for when you submit an MCP-backed ChatGPT plugin: domain verification, identity, test cases, release notes and a demo recording.

OpenAI now calls MCP-backed ChatGPT apps plugins. They are listed in the Plugins Directory, shared by ChatGPT and Codex, and go through OpenAI's plugin submission process. If you built a ChatGPT app earlier, a July 2026 sunpeak guide walks through submitting it as a plugin. Here is what a submission needs today.
What a submission needs
- A domain verification token at
/.well-known/openai-apps-challenge, on your MCP server's host or a parent host. - A verified identity, as an individual or a business.
- Apps Management write access for whoever submits.
- Five positive and three negative test cases.
- Release notes that summarize the version you submit and what changed.
- A demo recording.
Reviewer test credentials must work without MFA, SMS or email confirmation, or private-network access.
OpenAI's submission-errors page requires exactly five positive and three negative test cases, and its submission guide now lists the same five and three. Write exactly five and three.
Limits to know
Projects with EU data residency cannot currently submit MCP plugins.
What it means for SaaS connectors
Write the test cases to the exact count. In a Connector Launch Sprint, the eval suite in CI uses the same format: five positive and three negative prompts per platform.
